🤔Believe it or not, so much about our child’s behavior comes down to how we treat them.

😬This week there was a perfect example of where I had to choose between one of the seven deadly habits or one of the seven healthy habits.

🥰I wanted some help, and my usually quite eager to help 10 year-old was who I turned to. But he was exhausted and had already done his chores. This one was mine.

I had a choice. I could nag him or bribe him or reward him in an effort to control his behavior into what I wanted
“I’ll pay you trriiiipppllee….😁” or
“…ohhhh where is mom’s dependable helper? I know he’s in there. Just go water them.”

☠️But that’s deadly. It uses guilt and shame to control and manipulate someone into doing what we want them to do.

💡I had to remember that this was not his task. I was asking him a FAVOR. I knew his heart was a helping one, so if he said no, he truly was tired. so I needed to accept that, no matter how inconvenient it was for me.

💪🏼This is not to say “don’t ask for help”. It’s to say, “use the healthy ways to ask for help, and if help isn’t possible, avoid slipping into the deadly habits of control.”

📖Galatians 6:5 reminds us we each bear our own burden. If my son could help me, that’s a blessing. But it’s not his job to do my work.

📖Matthew 7:12 reminds us to do unto others as we want them to do to us. I certainly don’t want my son guilting me into doing things for him, so I won’t do the same.

🩹 parenting is the perfect playground for kids to learn the value of apologies

💔 I make mistakes all the time, but then I realized that every mistake I made was an opportunity to demonstrate from my son the importance of apologies for building relationships. I realized that it was his sandbox for learning how to make an apology himself.

🥰 the other day, he came and apologized to me and I was completely blown away by how mature his apology was. I asked him how he learned how to do that and he said “it’s simple. I just followed the example you always give me.” 🤣

🦸🏼‍♀️ we have such a great opportunity to be a living example for our kids

🤔When we see negative behavior or even lack of behavior —apathy, low engagement, laziness — we usually think “what need isn’t being met that they are trying to get met, simply a wrong way?”

☝🏼let’s not forget that mindset also affects behavior. A negative thought spiral can make the critic in any of our minds so loud it paralyzes us from healthy movement

✨ Here’s how to shift the mindset
1️⃣ notice any patterns that bring this on 👀
2️⃣ get to the root of the negative thought — what is the thought? Where did it come from? 📣
3️⃣ nurture healthy thinking — replace the negative thought (the critic) with a positive thought (the cheerleader). Focus on what is true and good. This builds confidence. Then if needed you can go back and address the thing behind the negative thought.

For example, say your child is feeling defeated about the upcoming spelling bee because they are a terrible speller. It may be true, but to sit in that negative spiral isn’t helpful. Shift to what is true. Are they a good learner? Can they learn new words? Or maybe they’re great at math, build their confidence with some math skills. When the inner cheerleader 📣 shows up, it helps overcome the effect the negative thoughts have. It’s much easier to address areas of weakness when we come from a place of confidence rather than defeat

😵‍💫 my son had gotten so worked up a few weeks ago. He was having trouble calming down and so I taught him breath prayer. Then my niece mentioned that she wasn’t getting restful sleep so I shared it with her.

🙏🏻 breath in truth for 4 seconds - hold onto the breath & truth for 4 seconds - exhale truth for 4 seconds - pause on that truth for 4 seconds - repeat

Rhythmic breathing has a calming effect and by connecting it with prayer we stay connected to the true source of peace in God the Father

🙏🏻 I love seeing the little ways our kids’ character shines in every day moments.

childhood is the best time to start building character because they are under the protection of our guidance as they learn right from wrong and how to be good friends and citizens

🥰 I have loved watching my son grow a helping spirit, a heart for honesty (even when it’s hard), and respect for boundaries

💡as parents, it’s also important to keep an eye out for areas where character still needs to be developed. In the same way that God is always working in us to build our character, we can ask the Holy Spirit to help show us areas where we can help our children build strong character

😖 there’s a terrible mantra floating around and it makes me sad. It says “feelings lie”. And it’s leading people to suppress emotions. Psychology research shows expressive suppression can lead to depression, anxiety, bullying, addiction, poor academic performance, and even unhealthy romantic relationships in adulthood.

💡to say feelings lie is simply untrue and unhealthy. Feelings are the sensations our body feels when things happen around us. They tell us what we need and they MOVE us to get that need met.

😊When things align with our values, beliefs and ideals, the feelings and nice or “good”.

🥺When things seem to go against our values, beliefs and ideals, we have a sensation of hurt, sadness, anger, loneliness, guilt, or shame, which can feel crummy.

😳where the “lie” comes in is if we whole-sale believe our feelings without taking into account the truth and all the facts and perspectives surrounding the situation, and then act in unhealthy ways that harm ourselves or others, simply guided by emotions/feelings.

🤲🏼 but feelings themselves don’t lie. They actually move us toward what we need. Whatever the feeling, there is a need behind it to reconcile our values, beliefs and ideas.

☝🏼the important thing is to be sure we move in healthy and positive ways that get our needs met, while also respecting the people around us

🥴life gets busy ⏰ but that’s when routines and rituals become so important to help us stay rooted

1️⃣we read together. We aim for 20 minutes but even if it’s only 5 minutes, it’s important. Sometimes it’s a fun Bible study from @notconsumed or fiction books with a biblical theme. We finished The Hidden Scrolls series by MJ Thomas @themikejthomas last year and this year we’re reading the Badger Hills Farm series by Jenny Phillips @thegoodandthebeautiful
2️⃣ we reflect on the day past and day to come. We reflect on something(s) 🙏🏻we’re grateful for, ☀️the best (or worst) part of our day, and 🤩something we are looking forward to the next day

💞These touch points in the day create security, even in the turmoil of life, and build healthy attachment, trust, connection, and warmth…

😠think about a time someone jumped to correct you before bothering to understand what was going on. It leads to frustration, versus when we first connect with our kids’ emotions, the correction is well received and leads to growth

🧠The highly triggered brain cannot process instruction so not only will our words likely do very little good, they also may exacerbate the issue

🤯 did you know most emotion only lasts 90 seconds? Think about it. Can you give them 90 seconds of empathy and space to calm down before jumping to problem solving mode?

🫶🏼 Ask your kiddo what lead them to act the way they did. What did they think? How are they feeling? Do they need help calming down first?

😤Jumping to discipline before asking questions to understand the underlying issue has 2 big risks:

1. The disciplinary measure may completely miss what actually needs to be addressed, and so the discipline becomes like seed that lands on rocky soil

When we don’t give them chance to share their heart or mind, it just heaps more burdens on them…it can lead to anxiety, depression, loneliness, resentment, or revenge …it harms the parent child relationship in many ways. It’s like the Pharisees just heaping laws on the people without helping them

😌I used to be so overwhelmed and exhausted in my parenting journey, until I realized 3 things were off.

😩Secure attachment requires availability, sensitivity, and responsiveness. But that looks different in various stages of life.

So as they grow and change, we must also adjust our ways
